(Ephesians 5:27)
“That He might present the church to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.”
Have you ever wondered why, as Christians, we still struggle with the old habits and temptations from our past? Why, if we are new creations, does living a life of purity feel like a daily battle?
The truth is, God’s desire for us is crystal clear: He is shaping His people—the Church—to be holy, pure, and without blemish. This isn’t just about appearing good on the outside. It’s about a deep transformation of the heart that affects every part of our lives.
Let’s dig into what it really means to desire purity as followers of Jesus, why it matters, and how we can live out this calling every day.
1️⃣ You Are a New Creation in Christ
The starting point for a life of purity isn’t our effort. It’s Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any person is in Christ, they are a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
When you trusted in Jesus, He didn’t just clean up your old self. He made you new. Your sins are forgiven. Your identity is forever changed. But while salvation is instant, sanctification—becoming holy in the way we live—is a process.
God doesn’t immediately take us to heaven after we’re saved. Instead, He calls us to walk in the new life He’s given us. This is where the choice to pursue purity comes in.
2️⃣ Putting Off the Old Life
Paul writes in Ephesians 4:22-24:
“Put off concerning the former lifestyle of the old man, which is corrupt according to deceitful lusts. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
Living a pure life starts with saying no to the old ways. The thoughts, habits, and desires that once ruled us no longer define us. But letting go of these things isn’t automatic. It’s a choice we make daily.
Ask yourself:
- What old attitudes or behaviors am I still clinging to?
- Do my thoughts and actions reflect my new identity in Christ?
Holiness begins in the heart, but it shows up in the way we live.
3️⃣ A Call to Holy Living
1 Peter 1:14-16 reminds us,
“As obedient children, not conforming yourselves according to your old life in your ignorance. But as He which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of lifestyle. Because it is written, Be holy; for I am holy.”
This is a high calling. God’s standard is not “just try your best.” It’s His own holiness. We are to reflect His character in every part of life—our words, choices, relationships, and even in what we watch, listen to, and dwell on.
It can feel overwhelming, but God never calls us to something He won’t empower us to do. The Holy Spirit helps us desire what is pure and strengthens us to live it out.
4️⃣ No More Excuses
Let’s be honest. We love excuses. They’re easier than change.
Some Christians excuse themselves from fellowship, saying they don’t need the church. Others argue about music styles or Bible versions while ignoring the deeper call to holiness. Many say, “This is just who I am,” as if change is optional.
But Scripture doesn’t let us off the hook. 1 Peter 1:13 says,
“Prepare your mind for action, be discerning, and eagerly expect the grace of God at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Living a pure, holy life takes effort. It requires discipline, humility, and a willingness to let God transform us. It also requires community—surrounding ourselves with other believers who encourage and challenge us.
5️⃣ Why Purity Matters
Why does God care so much about our purity? Because we’re not just living for ourselves. We’re His ambassadors to the world.
2 Corinthians 5:20 says, “Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God.”
When we live lives marked by purity, love, and holiness, we reflect Jesus to a watching world. Our words carry weight. Our actions point people to the hope we have in Him.
But when we compromise, we send a different message. We blend in instead of standing out. The world doesn’t see Jesus—they just see more of the same.
Living It Out: How to Pursue Purity Every Day
If you’re feeling convicted or overwhelmed, don’t lose heart. God doesn’t call us to perfection by our own strength. He calls us to walk with Him step by step.
Here are a few ways to start:
✅ Stay rooted in Scripture.
Let God’s Word renew your mind daily (Romans 12:2).
✅ Pray for a pure heart.
Ask the Holy Spirit to change your desires and reveal areas where you need to grow.
✅ Surround yourself with godly influences.
Choose friends and mentors who push you toward Christ, not away.
✅ Guard your mind and habits.
What you consume shapes your heart. Be intentional.
✅ Confess and repent quickly.
Purity isn’t about never falling. It’s about turning back to God every time you stumble.
Final Encouragement
The desire for purity isn’t about earning God’s love. You already have it. It’s about becoming who you truly are in Christ—a new creation, holy and set apart for His glory.
The journey may be challenging, but it’s worth it. A life marked by purity and holiness shines brightly in a dark world. It reflects Jesus, draws others to Him, and brings deep peace and joy to your soul.
So today, ask yourself: Am I living as a true ambassador of Christ?
Will I choose purity, even when it’s hard?
Take a step toward holiness today. Pray, surrender, and trust God to work in you. He is faithful to finish what He started.
